Enderocine carinoma terminal

Does this cause people to fall asleep involuntarily ? My dad has it and keeps falling asleep but sometimes it looks like he can’t keep his eyes open and they roll back abit when he falls asleep in chair

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening with your dad and can appreciate that any new or worsening symptom can cause concern.

Having cancer can make people feel very tired. They can fall asleep suddenly or struggle to keep their eyes open, and the eyes can roll back slightly. This can look frightening but it often just means they are drifting off to sleep.

Your dad's fatigue and falling asleep can be caused by the cancer itself, his medications, changes in blood chemistry (blood tests will check this), and changes in his general health.

If this keeps happening it's probably best to contact his GP or the palliative care team if he has one, and let them know so they can hopefully review him and advise further.

I’m not sure if your dad is being supported at home by a community palliative care team, often they are known as Macmillan nurses. They are experts in controlling cancer symptoms and can provide emotional support to you both. If he doesn't have a palliative care team involved in his care, he could ask his GP or hospital team to refer him.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
