I have just finished my month’s course of radiotherapy and am finding passing urine quite difficult especially in the evenings. Any help to try and rectify this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Bozwink, and thank you for your reply,
I’m sorry to hear you’ve needed radiotherapy and are now having bladder problems; that must be difficult for you.
I’m not sure of your exact situation or what cancer was treated, but if you’ve had radiotherapy to the pelvic area, these symptoms are quite common. Radiotherapy continues to work for a while after treatment ends, so side effects can sometimes feel worse before they start to improve.
Difficulty passing urine can happen because the treatment may cause temporary irritation or inflammation in the bladder or urinary tract.
To help ease things, try to stay well hydrated during the day, but perhaps reduce fluids a couple of hours before bedtime. Avoid drinks that can irritate the bladder, such as tea, coffee, alcohol, and fizzy drinks. Taking your time when passing urine can also help.
These side effects usually settle over time. If you notice pain, burning, blood in your urine, or if things don’t improve, please contact your treatment team or GP. They can check for infection or other causes and offer medication if needed.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to get back to us if you have any further questions. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, freephone 0808 800 4040.
