Not Again!

I have just received my results back from my routine smear which confirms I have HPV and abnormal cells on my cervix and therefore referred for a colposcopy. Not sure when that date will come through?

I am trying to be positive but struggling, having read the treatment options etc on the NHS website. I a currently under the care of the breast cancer team and due my 4th annual mammogram in January.

Don’t know if I am ready to do this again quite yet and hoping I am seen soon so I know one way or the other if I am going to need treatment,

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation and it's understandable that you are feeling worried especially with everything you've been through.

The cervical screening programme is all about preventing cancer by detecting abnormalities that can then be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal. When the smear test is HPV positive, the cells are looked at to see if there are any abnormal cells. If there are any cell changes then a colposcopy is recommended to have a closer examination of the cervix.

You are likely to get an appointment within a few weeks. None of this means that you're starting all over again .Cervical cell changes are very different from breast cancer and are simpler to sort out.

Cervical screening is very successful so as long as you attend your appointments when invited and follow the advice given to you at the clinic then everything should be okay. So please try not to overly worry about this.

I hope this has been of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
