Further health checks

Hello, I accidentally found out I had kidney cancer in 2018 after having had a heart MRI. I had a 5cm tumour in my kidney which was removed. Because of covid restrictions I didn't get annual CAT scans but the couple I did get came back clear. I must admit I felt a bit abandoned and my last scan appointment was cancelled. I only found out after turning up at the hospital after an almost 30 mile drive. They said as I had a scan previously for an unrelated health problem they didn't need to do another. So drove back home a bit fed up. That was 2 years ago. I just wondered if I would get any further checks as information has been pretty non existent. Thank you for letting me join and hope you can let me know what if anything, to expect.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry your follow up appointments and scans were interrupted by Covid.

How anyone is followed up after that is usually based on their individual situation and risk of the cancer returning.

I would get in touch with your GP and ask them if you need to have anymore follow up checks. Usually the specialist or surgeon would have written at the time to the GP explaining their findings and they would usually advise on what needs to happen next.

After scans stop, you are usually under the care of your GP. If you develop any symptoms in the future that you are worried about, do make an appointment to see them. They will decide if you need to go for further checks.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
