My Mum

My Mum has colorectal cancer. She hasn’t had test as the hospital doesn’t think she is well enough for procedures. She is 86 and has Parkinson's too. She has been suffering badly with constipation recently. We, her children look after her in her own home, we don’t have any help. Can someone help me navigate this?

  • Hello parkerxx, and thank you for posting.

I’m so sorry to hear about your mum’s situation. This must be an incredibly difficult time for you and your family.

If your mum is being cared for at home, her GP will usually oversee her care. With your mum’s permission, you can speak to the GP about what support is available. Different types of nursing support may help such as:

District nurses who can visit to help with practical care, such as managing constipation and medications and community palliative care nurses are specialists in symptom control, especially pain management, and can also provide emotional support for family members. If your mum needs help with washing, dressing, or other daily tasks, carers can be arranged to visit at home. This service is means-tested, so depending on your mum’s circumstances, there may be a cost involved.

We have detailed guidance on our website about support at home, including what services may be available. There is also a section for family and friends, which offers advice on supporting someone with cancer and looking after yourself during this time.

If you would like to speak with one of our nurses, please call our free helpline on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.

    Take care,

    Jemma
