2 December surgery

Im going into hospital on Tuesday 2 December for partial removal of my left kidney.   I have severe fibromyalgia,  osteoarthritis and sciatica in both legs together with wear n tear in both feet, mostly left side though.

I have passed all this information on at my pre-op which I found quiet daunting as the chap who measured my height etc and them took my BP with too smaller cuff said he could not pass me with BP of 172/90 then proceeded to take it "the old fashioned way" as he put it on my left arm apparently it was 160/90 and I passed muster according to him.

As Im an anxious person Im concerned my BP will yet again be too high for surgery, even though I take my meds regularly.

I've had to wait weeks for iron infusion because of incorrect paperwork and having my 2nd infusion tomorrow.  Again when I say the bp cuff is too small, all Im yold is it needs to be tight.

Any advice please?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your recent pre-operative experience at the hospital in preparation for your kidney surgery next week.

Hospitals are aware that blood pressure readings often rise before surgery, and one high number doesn't mean that your surgery will be cancelled. Although blood pressure cuffs when inflated can feel very tight, this usually stops when the cuff is deflating. A cuff that is too small can affect BP readings, but usually it would come off the arm when it's inflating if it was too small. However, it is important to ask when you go back for a large adult cuff or check with them that the cuff is the correct size for your arm circumference.

I appreciate that your chronic pain conditions and the delay with your iron transfusions can add to your stress levels. But the fact you are getting your second iron transfusion today is positive and I'm sure the team will see that you are doing everything you can to prepare for your surgery.

Hospitals also know that patients get anxious before surgery and hopefully they will do everything they can to make it go as smoothly as possible.

I hope everything goes well for you. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
