My friend's cancer journey - blood tests have shown cancer may have returned. Is it true she may only have another 5 years left?

After being diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer ,she had her op last January (full hysterectomy).they said it had all gone well and that she would  never be completely clear of cancer. She does take a tablet form of chemo for the next 3 yrs. However recently her blood tests have shown a real rise in her markers .ct scan and more blood test suggest cancer is back somewhere in her body but to have an mri to  try to find it. My question is....is it true that she will probably only have about 5yrs that other cancer will weaken her immune system.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your friend. This must be a very difficult time for you both.

We can't say what your friend's outcome/prognosis will be. Prognosis is really a question best answered by her specialist. This is because they are familiar with all her medical details and will know so much more about her individual situation. Doctors are usually happy to speak to relatives or friends provided they have her permission to do so.

The cancer itself doesn't usually weaken the immune system, but chemotherapy and other treatments can, which is why she will be monitored closely during treatment. After her test results are known, her doctors will be able to say what needs to happen next.

I hope this has been of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
