Mitigate pain

Any suggestions as to help pain in a shoulder tumour. I have stage 4 cancer, and the pain is now non stop. I have tried most medicines, morphines, naproxen, patches, etc. Thanks.

  • Hi CPF

It is rotten being in constant pain. Pain medicine only ever gives partial relief at doses where you can still function normally. I have constant low level pain due to bone mets to spine and left shoulder which has a fracture due to cancer. I never get a good nights sleep. I went to classes for relaxation and meditation ( this is not like me at all Im usually very dismissive of these) i was taught a technique to meditate and concentrate on the site of the pain then imagine transferring that pain to just outside your body, with practice it does work to an extent. Ask about this at the pain clinic it may not be for you but it is worth a try.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to read about your ongoing pain in your shoulder and can appreciate that this must be very difficult for you.

You may be experiencing nerve pain in your shoulder and if this is the case, it tends not to respond all that well to regular painkillers. Instead medicines which have an effect on nerves, and are more often used to treat epilepsy and depression, are used as they work better. But it can take time for them to work. And there can be some trial and error to get the best choice of these medicines at the right dose to get on top of the pain. Your GP should know about this so you may already have tried these types of drugs, if not ask about giving them a go, or if you are taking some already, ask if it is ok to increase the dose or about switching to another one. We have information on treating cancer pain on our website.

You could also ask for a referral to a pain clinic to get their input. The GP can arrange this.

I’m not sure if you are being supported by a palliative care team, often they are known as Macmillan nurses.. They are experts in controlling cancer symptoms such as pain and can provide emotional support. If you don't have a palliative care team involved in your care you could ask your GP or hospital team to refer you.
