Jaundice

Hi,

I had a tumor removed from my bowel in May, the cancer has spread to my liver. I have had 7 chemotherapy infusions & cgemo tablets at home for 2 weeks after each infusion.  My last treatment was scheduled for 20 November but I have developed Jaundice. The tumor in my liver has shrunk & my cancer markers are down.  The oncologist has put me on steroids for a week,  will I be able to resume chemotherapy? I have gained weight & am not feeling ill.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Jaundice can happen when the liver is under extra strain either from the cancer itself, chemotherapy, or from general inflammation. Steroids are often used to to help reduce inflammation and support the liver while things settle.

It's understandable to be worried but jaundice doesn't always mean that chemotherapy has to stop. Whether you can restart will depend on your liver function blood tests and many people are able to continue with their treatment once the jaundice improves. Sometimes the doctors may have to adjust the dose of chemotherapy.

It's good that you feeling well and your tumour markers have improved. Your specialist team are better placed to advise you on the next steps as they are familiar with all your medical details.

If you have a specialist nurse involved in your care, then perhaps they can provide you with further information .and support You often have to call and leave them a message, and they will get back to you.
