Follow up Appointment After Cervical Punch Biopsy

Hey guys just reaching out as I'm a bit stressed!

I had a cervical punch biopsy about 3 weeks ago, haven't yet received my results through post but got a phone call yesterday with a follow up appointment for late December.

Is this anything to be worried about? Will I still get my results through the post?

My first smear had high grade abnormal cells, HPV negative I'm 33 now so I'm stressing out with the new changes to smears that it's something more sinister and wasn't picked up on my smear last year.

Thanks!

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you are worried about your biopsy results, but it is not unusual for people to receive these results face to face.

Cervical smear results are generally in letter form. But all kinds of biopsy results are normally given via a face to face appointment or phone call. This can also be a decision that a hospital has made locally to do.

If you had screening last year that was HPV negative it would be unusual that a year later there would be cancer cells present, this is because there are many stages in between. But, when you see your team they will talk through everything.

To reassure you the changes in how they are carrying out the cervical screening programme would not mean something is less likely to be picked up. We have information on the primary HPV screening on our website if it helps to read through.

This NHS trust has provided information on cervical punch biopsies if useful to read. Your own hospital trust may have similar online.

Take care and if you remain concerned do talk to your doctor.

    Sarah.
