Clear discharge from one nipple

For context I’m 21 and I had a scare last year because I have lumps (becomes painful a week before period) I had an ultrasound and they said I was fine.

But today I noticed clear liquid leaking out from only one of them when I squeeze. Given I do touch them a lot but I’d have thought if that was the cause then it would leak from both?
im a little worried and I’m not sure if I should book a doctor appointment asap or wait a couple weeks and see if it’s still happening.

  • Hi Sully-k,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am glad to hear that your scare last year turned out to be fine. However, as this is a different symptom, it would be just as well to get it checked out as soon as you can. You won't be wasting anybody's time, as we are always advised to get any different symptoms checked out. At your age, it is unlikely to be anything serious, but better to make sure. I am keeping my fingers crossed that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello and thank you for your enquiry. I'm sorry you have a health worry.

The NHS have written some useful information on nipple discharge.  They do say that without any other symptoms other than nipple discharge it is unlikely to be cancer, but it is important to have it properly assessed. You can read more about this on their website

There are quite a few breast conditions (not cancer) that cause discharge, even hormone level fluctuations. It is quite common in younger women.

Please don't squeeze your nipples to create discharge, as this can increase the chance of getting a breast infection, and causes breast tissue swelling.

    I hope this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
