Radiotherapy recovery

I received 5 days of radiotherapy in the beginning of September during treatment developed an occasional cough. This cough has progress and I still have it. Seen by GP who sent me for a chest xray, all clear. I've just completed a second course of prednisolone. Whilst on prednisolone cough reduced, been off it 2 days and cough frequency has increased. I have a follow up appointment with GP in 7 days. Any suggestions as to next steps? Cause?

  • Hello Joanne and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the cough you have been having. It is not unusual to have some side effects from the radiotherapy which may include a cough and breathlessness. It does sound like the steroids helped with these symptoms. Symptoms do tend to go on for a while. Depending on how much the cough is affecting you, you could either get in touch with your GP or see how you go over the next 7 days.

Make sure that you are well supported in bed or chair with pillows. Try not to over exert yourself. Trying to make sure that you are drinking enough fluids are all important measures.

We have a general page on our website about radiotherapy treatment side effects which you might find helpful to look at.

Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you would like to talk things through.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
