Lobectomy - 12 months later and my daughter is still having pain and finding breathing in cold conditions difficult. Is this normal?

My 30yo daughter had a lobectomy 12 months ago.

she still has pain and finds breathing in damp or cold weather hard and sometimes painful - she has been back to the gp and has had either an ultrasound or X-ray (I’m not sure which) and they’re not concerned. Is this pain and breathing normal even a year on, should she be worried? Is there anything she can do to improve her breathing?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the lobectomy your daughter needed a year ago and the side effects she is continuing to experience.

Unfortunately there can be some problems after lung cancer surgery as explained on the CRUK webpages and some of these can be longer term side effects.

Shortness of breath including some discomfort can be one of these but often a referral to a breathlessness clinic can help, so do encourage your daughter to ask her GP about this.

It is reassuring to hear she had an chest x-ray (I presume) that came back okay so hopefully nothing more serious is causing this.

I hope this is helpful but do get back if you have anymore questions. The helpline is also open weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to call us.

    All the best

    Naomi
