Don't understand - wife being tested for lymphoma

Last week my wife had a Mammogram and 3 biopsy samples were taken. She also has years of random bruising all over. Only now are these things being linked. Today,  week after the samples were taken, we had a call to say that she was to have blood tests for Lymphoma next week and a phone call to discuss the results a week later. Where I am confused is this.... The doctor has seen the results of the scan and the biopsies. If they are clear then I assume that the Lymphoma test is just to rule it out. However, if the test is to discover more following positive results from the biopsies then why would a doctor deliver bad news over the phone? Anyone else been in this situation? Do they do bad news over the phone?

  • Hello Vig07

I can only go from my experience travelling along side my hubby. ....his consultant asked if we were comfy talking on the phone about this before sharing ...It is really up to your wife as the patient though ...

What does she think? .Also suggest you give the CRUK nurses a call and have a chat they are very supportive and this may ease your mind in the mean time.

Hope things go well for your wife. .Sending strength RB

  • Hi Vig07 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your wife’s situation. I can understand how unsettling this maybe waiting to hear her results.

It is not necessarily true that only bad results are given face-to face. Due to work pressures, staff shortages, or Dr’s strikes, even negative results may be conveyed via mail or phone.

Different consultants or departments may have varying approaches to sharing results.

Most consultants prefer not to disclose results over the phone or by mail, most of them opt for face-to-face communication, regardless of whether the news is good or bad.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for your wife.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
