Urgent Ultrasound Referral

Hello,

I recently discovered a 4cm plus round, firm, painless lymph gland in my right axilla. I haven't had any obvious signs of infection/virus other than persistent fatigue and a four day headache (no repsiratory/head cold symptoms). Over the last 18 months I've lost just over 3 and a half stone. I have been trying to be more active and make healthier eating choices but the weight loss is disproportionate to the effort put in. Most of the weight loss has been helped by a reduced appetite. One of my siblings was diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of 50 (he passed a short while ago - not of lymphoma). Periodically I have had high platelets lasting for several months. They usually come down but then go back up. The GP referred me for an urgent ultrasound and it was rejected by the imaging team who said I need to be referred to the breast clinic. I don't have any physical signs of breast cancer on examination of that area and I'm most concerned about lymphoma or another form of cancer. If lymphoma is suspected do you usually have to be seen by the breast clinic before being about to have an ultrasound? I'm a bit frustrated because I feel like I am being passed from pillar to post...any advice welcome.

Thanks x

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your sibling having lymphoma and how since having these symptoms you are now also worried about the cause.

Symptoms as you will be aware can be caused by many different things and often a series of tests need to be carried out to find out more. It isn't unusual for a lump in the armpit to be referred at first to the breast unit where it can be assessed further. They can also ultrasound the lump and biopsy it if needed, so this shouldn't delay the process for you.

If a biopsy is taken this can determine what the lump is made up of. Which will give further information to the doctor about what this might be and what needs to happen next.

Try not to worry, it seems this is being taken seriously and hopefully you will know more very soon.

Do get back in touch if needed or if you would like to talk things through give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
