Is it the morphine?

Hi my sister has stage 4 terminal bowel cancer and is in palliative care unit, she has deteriorated rapidly while there and they are increasing morphine through syringe driver often. My question is, would she be unconscious if she was not on medication. Thanks

  • Hello Lynd, so sorry to hear about your sister.  I also have stage 4 cancer, so I feel qualified to answer your question to a certain degree.  It is quite usual for large quantities of morphine to be given to a cancer patient when they are nearing the end of their life.  It is difficult to say whether or not your sister would be conscious if she wasn't on the morphine, but it is certainly possible that without the morphine she would be suffering pain.   I have noticed that when I have large doses of morphine, I tend to fall in to a deep sleep that lasts for hours.  In short, it is POSSIBLE that the morphine is keeping your sister in a state of unconsciousness,  but at this stage, the job of her medical team is to make her as comfortable as possible.

  • Thank you.  She has managed her pain really well until very recently. She was admitted to hospital for nausea and was meant to come home last Saturday, that day she was sick so they kept her in. Since then it’s been a rapid daily decline ; she’s now unconscious. Thank you for responding and I wish you well on your journey with it

  • Hello Lynd, and thank you for posting,

I’m so sorry to hear about your sister’s situation. That must be incredibly difficult for you and your family.

As violetgirl has also mentioned, it is difficult to say whether your sister would remain unconscious without the Morphine. However, when someone is in the very advanced stages of illness, it’s common for them to become less responsive or unconscious as part of the natural progression of the disease, even without medication.

Morphine will be given to keep her comfortable and ease symptoms such as pain rather than to make her unconscious. If you have any concerns about her care or want more clarity, it is best to speak with the palliative care team, as they are involved in your sister's care and can explain what’s happening and why.

I hope this helps in some way. Please feel free to get back to us. If you would like to speak to one of our nurses, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday freephone 0808 800 4040.
