What alternative?

I am due to have a rectal exam for raised PSA but also have heameroids and read that the doc may decline due to upsetting this problem. If so, what would be alternative to identifying any concerns please!

  • Hello and thanks for posting

If your doctor thinks that a rectal examination isn't suitable for you because of your haemorrhoids, they may consider other alternatives. This could be monitoring your PSA levels, instead of relying on just one PSA result they may look at how they change over time. A rising pattern can give useful information. An MRI scan may be suggested and this shows the size and structure of the prostate and highlight any areas that look unusual. An ultrasound scan may be another possibility. it's not as detailed as an MRI scan but can give some useful information.

Before your doctor considers other tests they may first refer you to see a urologist ( prostate specialist) at the hospital. They may be able to safely perform a rectal examination using a numbing gel. But after assessing you they will discuss what needs to happen next.

I hope that helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to ring is freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
