mum just diagnosed yesterday and need advice

Mum is 89 and just been diagnosed after 4 weeks in hospital for what was thought to be an infection. She has aggressive cancer and I was due to bring her home today . The hospital said we will get an appointmnet some stage over next two weeks with oncology to organise things but she is coming home today and wants to. I think her pain is worse and I am worried how to look after her over the weekend . What do I do

  • Just love her, and do all you can, if you are struggling call on family and friends, and if you are worried about her. Call 111 or take her to the doctors. You can only do what you can do my sweet x

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry we haven't been in touch over the weekend but hope all is well with your mum.

Hopefully you will hear something soon from the hospital about what needs to happen next. As others have said on here if your mums pain is uncontrolled or there is anything else concerning you let the GP know so they can assess her.

I am not sure whether your mum has been referred to a palliative care team but these are made up of doctors and nurses (can be hospital and/or community based) and specialise in symptom management.

The GP can refer your mum to a Macmillan nurse if this hasn't already been arranged and often these can be a good point of contact for patients and their loved ones.

There are a variety of different community nursing and other social services provision that patients may need at home. On the website you can read about support at home for you and your family.

You can also search up by postcode other local cancer support centre, groups and charities local to you that may also be worth knowing about on the cancer care map.

I appreciate this must be a difficult time for you with so much to take in and get used to. I hope you also have the support of friends and family to also help you navigate this season.

If you are unable to get hold of anyone or in an emergency call NHS 111 for advice.

Do get back if you have more questions or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040.

    Take care

    Naomi
