Epilepsy and cancer treatment

Just been diagnosed with a cancer on my tonsil, wont find out type till monday, however I recieved an appointment for a kidney. Function scan with a radioactive isotope, Rang the hospital today to check date, and was told it was to prior to chemo, which was news to me.  However I have controlled epilepsy and No one seems to care how it may effect my epilepsy, which I take medication for

what are possible risks?

  • Hello Elizabethr and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

It is good to hear that your epilepsy is well controlled. Before chemotherapy is given in a lot of cases the doctors like to check how the kidneys are functioning. How well the kidneys are working may affect the type of chemotherapy that you are given or even the dose.

I can't say what effect the treatment will have on your epilepsy but the doctors may not be too concerned if it is well controlled and you have had epilepsy for a while. If you are having oral chemotherapy at home you could always ask to speak to a pharmacist at the hospital about the epilepsy medication you are currently having with any other medication.

Do continue to remind the doctors about your epilepsy. If you are under the care of a neurologist you could get in touch with them once you know about the chemotherapy you will be offered.

You may find it helpful to contact Epilepsy Society to see if they have any information about chemotherapy and the possible effect on epilepsy.

Every person reacts to treatment in different ways and I do hope everything goes well for you.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Thank you for your further post, it is understandable that you may be feeling overwhelmed and scared, all of which are normal feelings.

You may have seen our website, which has information on tonsil cancer and treating tonsil cancer, which I hope is useful.
