Sternum pain after mammogram

Hello, I just wondered, is it normal or ok to feel pain after a mammogram? Has anyone else experienced this? I had my yearly check-up today, and it took 2 attempts to get the left breast scanned, so 6 lots of squishing in total! I'm pretty small-chested and have dense breasts too, which I understand can make it harder to do a mammogram? It was so painful, and my chest is still really sore, right in the middle. Just wanted some reassurances that this might be normal and will go in a few days time, hopefully? Thank you!

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the pain and discomfort your experienced having your mammogram carried out.

Unfortunately it can be more challenging to screen smaller denser breasts but at least it is done now and hopefully all is well.

It isn't unusual if you have been prodded and pulled around to notice some aches and pains in the area for a few days after. Take some pain relief and take it easy not to exert yourself too much if you can to help it settle.

Of course if it continues or gets worse let your doctor know.

    All the best

    Naomi
