Sarcoma

Hi I’ve had an ultrasound and have been told I have a possible 3cm sarcoma to the size of my foot and wondered how common this is and what the prognosis is please?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are currently having some tests to check out this lump on your foot.

Whilst this must be a worrying time for you, try and takes things one step at a time and don't let your thoughts get ahead of you until you have all the facts.

Sarcomas are a rare type of cancer and there are various sub types. As and when a sarcoma is diagnosed the treatment and outcome will be dependent on the type and stage ( size and extent of the tumour).

It is only once someone has been formally diagnosed that the specialist doctor involved in the patients care who can say what needs to happen next and what the prognosis may be.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will turn out okay for you.

You know where we are if you need to get back in touch

    All the best

    Naomi

  • I can’t find the actual statistics but I did read that the majority of lumps referred as possible sarcomas are non-cancerous.  So that is a big positive that you can try to hang on to while you wait, difficult though that may be.

My own sarcoma journey started in July.  After the ultrasound I was sent for an MRI and then a biopsy.  The time between each seemed like an eternity.  The doctors do need to do all of this, however, to give you a proper diagnosis or to hopefully rule out cancer.  My consultant said there was no point trying to cut any corners when I commented on how difficult it was being in limbo.   After the biopsy I was given the dreaded news.  I then had a CT/PET scan to see if it had spread.  Even after this they have not said anything about prognosis to me and I have asked.

If you look at Sarcoma U.K.’s website you will see that it is uncommon and that there are more than 70 types of soft tissue sarcoma.  I know less about bone sarcomas but I guess that might be a possibility for you given its location.  I understand that bone sarcomas are even rarer than soft tissue sarcomas. So you see they really do need to go through all the tests with you to give you the answers you are seeking.  I know that is really hard to deal with.

I very much hope that your lump is a cyst or something else benign.  Hope this helps you a little. Stay strong and try to focus on positive things
