Internal scar tissue

The answer to my question could well be how long is a piece of string, as the saying goes.

How long can internal scar tissue last? I had surgery almost two years ago to remove a large sarcoma which necessitated removing my left kidney, spleen, left half of the colon and about half the pancreas. I found the description of scar tissue as being like cobwebs and this https://www.innova-pain.com/2015/06/10/what-is-scar-tissue/ useful.

  • Perhaps there is no answer? :-)

  • Hi Mary and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that you have required past treatment for a sarcoma.

I can appreciate that you have questions.

Scar tissue can behave differently with each individual, but generally scar tissue inside the body can last a very long time. It forms when the body heals after surgery or an injury. At first, it changes and tightens for about 6 months to a year. After that, it can stay for years, and sometimes forever. In some cases, it can soften and feel more normal over time, but it doesn’t usually go away completely.

Cambridge University Hospitals Trust has information on scar tissue which you may find helpful. Equally your own hospital may also have information on scar tissue.

I hope this information is useful.

  • Thank you. That is helpful and, I am sure, will be to others too.

In the meantime, my sarcoma consultant rang me about something and I was able to have a good discussion with him about various things including scar tissue.

I am one lucky person. :-)
