  • Hello Louise and thank you for posting.

It can be stressful and cause anxiety waiting for tests and test results; this must not be easy.

There can be many reasons for a blocked bile duct, such as gallstones or inflammation and in some situations, cancer. To make a definite diagnosis, there are usually several steps that are involved. These can include, as you have already mentioned, imaging: MRI, CT and ultrasound, which show whether the ducts are blocked and if there’s a mass or abnormal narrowing (stricture), along with blood tests such as liver function test.

Other procedures that may be done include endoscopic procedures such as ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), which can be done to relieve the blockage, take brushings or biopsies, and place a stent if needed. However, a biopsy is the best way to confirm a diagnosis.

We have more information about tests for bile duct cancer that I hope will be useful. I imagine the next step may be an ERCP or EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) to get tissue samples and decide the best plan.

If cancer is confirmed (bile duct cancer or cholangiocarcinoma), treatment depends on where it is and whether surgery is possible: Surgery is done if the tumour is localised and operable. Other options may include: Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted or immunotherapy (depending on the situation).

The team at the hospital are best placed to say what happens next, as they know your husband's situation.

I hope you can get some answers soon. Feel free to come back to us. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available 9-5 Monday - Friday, freephone 0808 800 4040.

  • Hi Jemma

thanks for the above information. Saw consultant yesterday Paul diagnosed with bile duct cancer and going to hospital tomorrow for whippers procedure Thursday. Just so worried as jaundice so bad and he feels so unwell will they be able to help with this till Thursday?
my daughters obviously heartbroken as myself too. The consultant said it appears to be localised and would follow up at a later date with chemotherapy.

can I check is the correct / best treatment been offered ? I used to work for CRUK as an awareness nurse for the nw roadshow so a little knowledge is a bad thing sometimes.

    any advice would be grateful

  • Hi Louise and thanks for the update

I am so sorry to hear about your husband and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for your family

It sounds like the hospital are acting quickly to get him the treatment he needs, which is good to hear.

I am sure the specialist team involved in his care are planning to give him the best possible outcome with the treatment they are proposing. This can look different from patient to patient but this is because every patients situation will vary in type of cancer type and stage as well as their general health and fitness levels.

If you haven't as yet do take a look at the information about bile duct cancer and treatments on the website.

I hope everything goes to plan this week and the surgery is successful. Do get back in touch any time and if you would like to talk to us over the phone please do call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
