Head and Neck cancer recurrance

Hello, new here!

My husband had tongue cancer two years ago and was diagnosed with tonsil cancer yesterday.  He's waiting for a biopsy to determine a 'score' and to decide on a treatment plan.  He can't have surgery or radiotherapy due to his previous cancer.  Chemo and/or immunotherapy is likely.  I don't know much about this but what I've read, I get the distinct impression it's to prolong his life rather than cure.  Is this likely to be the case?  Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks so much

  • Hi VickytheViking and thank you for your post.

I’m sorry to learn that your  husband has had tongue cancer in the past and has now been diagnosed with tonsil cancer. I can appreciate this must feel  overwhelming for you both.

When surgery and radiotherapy aren’t possible, doctors often use chemotherapy or immunotherapy. These treatments can sometimes shrink the cancer and help keep it under control, but they don’t always cure it. Often the aim is to slow things down and help your husband feel as well as possible for as long as possible. With the right treatment, some people can live with cancer for a long time.

How well it works depends on the type of cancer, whether it has spread, and his overall health. Once the biopsy results are back, the team will explain the plan and what to expect.

I hope this information helps and you know more about the treatment plan soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
