Need advice / help - I've had serious symptoms affecting my life for 3 months but my GPs tell me not to worry. How do I get them to listen to me?

I have several serious symptoms that have been affecting my life for 3 months and I spend basically every day in bed exhausted in pain but the gps I speak to just tell me not to worry because I'm young and have anaemia and they think it's all just anaemia but I know something is very wrong. What do I even say to get them to take me more seriously? I feel like no one is validating my concerns I'm very distressed

  • Hello Emma5 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious about your health.

We are unable to tell you what is wrong but if your symptoms carry on then do go back and discuss this with your doctor or another doctor in the practice who can give you a second opinion. The Patient Association have some information on how to make the most of your GP appointment.

It may help to look at other aspects of your life. Trying to take regular exercise, health eating and trying to get enough sleep. The NHS have produced some information on Living Well.

I do hope that your symptoms improve. If the pain continues it may help to get a physio referral to try and get some simple exercises to try and help you to mobilise. In some areas of the country you can refer yourself to physio. It may be helpful to ask your GP practice whether this would be possible.

    All the best,

    Catherine
