What to do? Not sure whether to have surgery or radiotherapy

Hi just looking for any advice as to what path to take re surgery or Radiotherapy. Diagnosed late June with T3 and met with the 2nd Consultant yesterday.

As i live on my own i find it hard to decide what path to take. Any advice would be very helpful.

  • Hi Gallupp and thank you for your post.

Thank you for sharing how you feel. It’s normal to find this decision hard, especially when you live on your own.

Both surgery and radiotherapy can treat your cancer well, but they work in different ways and have different side effects.

Surgery means removing the prostate.  This may cause problems like leaking urine or trouble with erections. Radiotherapy uses strong X-rays to kill cancer cells. It can cause tiredness and sometimes bowel or bladder changes.

Your doctors can explain what each option means for you. You may be able to talk it through with your specialist nurse or doctor again.

You might also find it helpful to write down what matters most to you, like recovery time or side effects. If you want, you can ask about support at home during treatment.

Questions you may like to  ask at your next appointment to help you decide:

What are the main benefits and risks of surgery for me?

What are the main benefits and risks of radiotherapy for me?

How will each treatment affect my daily life?

How long will recovery take for each option?

What support can I get at home during treatment?

If I choose one treatment, can I still have the other later if needed?

I hope you find this information helpful in guiding your decision-making process.
