surgery for synovial sarcoma

I was just wondering why my husbands doctor isnt offering surgery! He has synovial sarcoma metastasised into both lungs (widespread), everything I have read seems to say that there should be some kind of surgery offered whether thats removal or ablation. Please help hes only 34 and we have two small children!

  • Hello Siobhan 1504 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband and I can understand that when you read treatment options for a certain condition you can't understand why your husband is not getting a particular treatment.

Everyone's case is treated very individually but it's important that you both find out the answer to your questions. Do talk to his team with your husband so you know the reasoning for any treatment decisions. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

When you read online about a certain cancer it is general and does not relate to each individual patient.

I am not sure whether your husband is being treated in a sarcoma specialist centre. He may have access to a specialist nurse so do talk to them.

You may find it helpful to get in touch with Sarcoma UK which is a charity specialising in this condition. Their helpline number is Freephone 0808 801 0401.

You are also very welcome to ring the nurses on our helpline. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • If you are dissatisfied with the treatment being suggested you can always seek a second opinion.  It might be an idea to first ask your husband’s consultant and/or your sarcoma nurse to explain the treatment options available and why they have suggested the course of treatment being offered. They do seem to go through a process of consultation with the multidisciplinary team to decide what is best for each individual patient if he is being treated by a specialist sarcoma centre (which he should be).

What is also true is that there are a large number of different sarcomas so the information you can find online may not apply to your husband’s type of sarcoma.  It is a difficult time for you both - don’t be afraid to ask questions and advocate for your husband.  Good luck with everything
