Palliative care for my mum - she's just found out she has stage 4 cancer and can't have chemo

Hi, my mum has just found out she has stage 4 cancer. She has it in her liver whole lung, breast bone, and now neck. Do you know what the life expectancy on average is for this cancer?  She found out about 2 weeks ago and she cant have chemotherapy  because she is to fragile. Thank you

  • Sorry to hear about your mum. I also have been diagnosed 3 months ago with stage 4 ovarian cancer. I had my first chemotherapy  2 weeks ago.

  • Awww i am so sorry to hear this.  I hope you get the best help and the best pain relief. I am absolutely devastated  for mum mum. I wish I could help her   its  so horrible  for anyone going through this. I will say a prayer for you x

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am very sorry to hear about your mum's situation, this must be such a difficult time for you.

Unfortunately it is always very difficult to predict how long someone may have and there are so many different factors that affect a person's prognosis. Whilst the stage of cancer is one factor other things such as the general health and fitness level of the patient and other health conditions may also contribute to this.

We usually advise patients and their relatives to ask the specialist team involved about time frames as they are in a better position to give an answer based on their experience of similar patients.

I hope your mum is getting the help and support she needs at this time to keep her as well and comfortable for as long as possible.

Do get back in touch if you have more questions and you are also welcome to call the nurses on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

Wishing you and your mum all the very best.

    Take care,

    Naomi
