Secondary lung treatment

Ask a question.  My 87 year old mum has cancer in her rectum and had spread to her lungs which is the consultants main concern.  She starts chemo on Friday and we have to attend Wednesday before.  She has been told it will be intravenous and has also been made aware that may be a pic line which she is terrified of having.  Why would they use a pic line?

many thanks

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum, this must be a difficult time for your both.

It is a common procedure to have a picc peripherally inserted central catheter line inserted prior to starting chemotherapy. This is because it is much easier and safer to give chemotherapy through a central line. Sometimes it can be difficult to access a suitable vein for every treatment which can cause distress for patients.

It is however important to talk through any concerns your mum may have about her treatment so they can put her mind at ease and make this as easy as possible for her.

I hope this helps but do get back in touch as necessary. The helpline is also open weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

All the best to you both

    Naomi
