Post Wide Lesion Excision Pain still occurring almost a year after having the procedure done. Is this normal?

Hi,

I had a melanoma in situ removed in October 2024. I had a 6 month post follow up appointment with a dermatologist. I informed them that I still get allot of pain/inflammation/redness/pins and needles at the site and further away from site. She was not concerned and advised that this was normal? The scar is is pinkish and red/raised at either end sometimes but also sometimes the skin next to the scar is slightly darker as in a bit blue/grey??
It is on my outer left thigh. Can anyone advise me if this is normal? Many thanks :))

  • PS it was a high grade melanoma if that helps. Thank you

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are having a problem with pain a year on from melanoma surgery. It can take time for tissues to fully heal.

Nerves can be cut or damaged which can cause odd sensations like pins and needles for many months. This can often take a longer time to go compared to other types of pain.

I can't comment on the look or the colour, but you have said it's been reviewed by the specialist, so they would have said that if they felt concern about the appearance.

Scarring takes time to change from red/pink and bumpy; everyone's skin is different. It may help to post on another thread on the forum to hear from others who have been through to similar.

This information leaflet, produced by a UK NHS trust, on scars following surgery may be an interesting read; your own hospital might have similar online.

Take care, and if you remain concerned, do get in touch with your doctor or GP. If you would like to talk to the nurses on the helpline do call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri,9-5.

    Sarah.

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank you kindly for getting back to me with my concern as stated above :)

I will do as suggested in your response if I become more concerned. I am sure all is ok

    kindest regards
