Colposcopy worry

Hi all,

I'm 34 and have had HPV for several years and have had a previous colposcopy with no treatment. I have missed 2 years of annual smear test (I know that's not good). I've just had a recent smear and have been referred for another colposcopy.

I have no results from my smear but I'm assuming they are HPV+ with abnormal cell changes.
I think I'm looking for reassurance really, I don't have clinical symptoms but I do have polycystic disease (ovarian/kidney/liver) so can often have some pain related to this but now I'm spiraling that it may be something else.

I don't think I particularly have a question, just looking for reassurance. Colposcopy is in just under 2 weeks.

thanks

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

It is natural to be a little worried about undergoing tests and the same goes for colposcopy.

Unfortunately no one here can say what this will or won't show, the important thing is the cervix is looked at more closely to find out what is going on.

As you have had a colposcopy before you probably remember what will happen . They will stain the cervix to show up any areas of abnormality and then take biopsies as necessary. The colposcopy staff will explain what they are doing and what they can see along the way. There are occasions where they will advise a treatment on the day to remove an area of abnormality whereas other times they will wait for the biopsy results.

Most people who have abnormal cervical screenings won't have cancer cells found but precancerous changes that can be treated to prevent them turning into cancer. If and when cancer is found through screening it is usually at an early stage where treatment is successful.

I hope you know more soon and your appointment goes well. Try and keep yourself busy and your mind on other things as you wait. Do get back in touch if you need to or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care
