Breast biopsy repeat

I had a breast biopsy last week, and was told to come back on Wednesday for the result. This appointment was then rescheduled to Friday because of a backlog at the lab.
Today a nurse called me and said rather than bring me in tomorrow would it be ok to come in on Monday as they need to do another biopsy. She said the biopsy results showed that it was just denser breast tissue. ThE team had discussed it and decided, as is policy, to have another biopsy taken. She repeated that it was breast tissue.

Does it mean that the sample was not of the correct area?
or does it mean that the sample was of the correct area but that part of iit is normal?

many thanks

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I can appreciate that it can be difficult to make sense of a situation when appointments change and you’re waiting on results.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like the biopsy sample taken showed only dense breast tissue. This is a common finding. Dense tissue can sometimes make it more challenging to get a clear picture, especially if the area of concern is small or difficult to access.

Not being involved in your care, we cannot say why a repeat biopsy is needed.

The team’s decision to repeat the biopsy doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. It may be they want to be sure they’ve sampled the exact area they were aiming for. This is often part of standard practice when the first sample doesn’t give them all the information they need.

So it could be that the sample didn’t come from the precise area they were concerned about, or it could be that it did, but the result wasn’t conclusive enough, so they want to double-check.

Either way, it means that the team are being thorough and careful.

If you’re feeling unsure, do ask the team to clarify things again for you when you have your appointment.

I hope this helps in some way. Please feel free to get back to us. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, you can call us on 0808 800 8080 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday
