Lichen sclerosis

I’ve been diagnosed with LS after having a biopsy a year ago. . Ive been given steroid cream and told to use it for no more than two weeks at a time. I’ve noticed that the white patches are back and I am very itchy around my perianus. It’s not clear to me how many cycles of two weeks must I do since I know the cream thins the skin. Ive not been told to have regular check ups and in fact it’s not been discussed with me at all. At what point should I get this checked out again

  • Hi Gillpat and thank you for your post.

I’m really sorry to hear what you’re going through.

Lichen sclerosus can be very painful when it flares up.

Lichen sclerosus is a skin condition that can make the skin itchy, sore, and look white or shiny. It often affects the skin around your private parts and bottom.

You’ve been given a  steroid cream to help calm the skin. It’s normal to worry about using it too much, but if you use it the right way, it can help without causing harm.

The two-week cycle of steroid cream is for a short-term flare-up’s, not to be used continuously.

If you’re not sure how to use the cream or feel worried, it’s a good idea to speak to your GP or nurse again.

Maybe you discuss  a long-term management plan with your doctor, which may include more frequent or different types of topical steroids and regular check-ups to monitor for potential changes.

I hope you feel better soon.

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
