Is this routine or is something more serious going on?

My sister has had DCIS and a malignant tumour in the past (separately)— she's had a double mastectomy many years ago. She's due an implant replacement because they've been causing her pain. She's had her consult a while ago and they've booked for her to get an MRI to, according to her, "rule out if there's anything in the remaining tissue or in the bone" before they go ahead with booking her surgery.

Is this routine? Is this normal? I'm so worried it's more serious and she's downplaying it, she's the type who might do that

  • Hi 35263518 and thank you for your post.

I'm really sorry to hear your sister has required treatment for  breast cancer.  It's totally understandable that you're worried.

The MRI scan doesn’t mean something serious is going on. Her hospital specialist is just being thorough due to her past history of DCIS and breast cancer.

The doctors want to make sure everything looks okay before doing her surgery. The pain could be from the implant, or maybe scar tissue.

I hope all goes well with your sister’s surgery. and the MRI scan looks okay.

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
