Neuropathy after chemo

Advanced prostate cancer. I have just finished 6 cycles of chemo. At stage 5 I developed neuropathy in my fingers. My nails are now discoloured loose and smell nasty. Can you give me any idea as to how this develops and how long before it improves. I am taking Pyridoxine 3 times a day for past 5 weeks with no improvement.

  • Hi Toonie10 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the treatment you have had for prostate cancer and the ongoing problems with side effects that you have been suffering with since.

It is a known side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs that changes to your nails and nerves, in your hands and feet, can occur.

Peripheral Neuropathy, can cause tingling, numbness, or pain.

It can start during or after chemotherapy. Sometimes it gets worse for a few months after treatment ends – this is called “coasting” as described on Macmillan website.about

Peripheral Neuropathy. Unfortunately it can take a while to improve, sometimes months or even longer after treatment ends.

You may like to speak to your doctor if you feel the pyridoxine (vitamin B6), is not helping to improve the peripheral neuropathy as there maybe something else they can prescribe.

Your nails might become loose, discoloured, or have an odour. This could also be due to the chemotherapy. You may like to read our webpage on skin, nails and cancer drugs.

It’s important to let your doctor or nurse know, as they might want to check for signs of infection. It is also important to make your specialist team aware if things do not improve or get worse.

In the meantime, try to keep your hands clean and dry and avoid soaking them in hot water. Try to use a gentle moisturiser and wear gloves when doing chores.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
