The FIT (faecal immunochemical test) is done to look for hidden blood in poo, which, if found, can be caused by several conditions, including bowel cancer.
When the FIT is tested at the laboratory, it is given a number. Anything below 10 is negative; no hidden blood has been found, and it is unlikely that there is a bowel cancer. Anyone who has a result of 10 or above means this is a positive result, blood has been found, and they will be referred to the hospital for further tests, usually a colonoscopy to check the bowel and make sure there is no cancer.
