Lymph Nodes

I have had swollen lymph nodes on and off for around 6 plus months, they come and go, I dont have regular periods due to the pill I am on, I put the swollen lumps in my armpits down to shaving, deodorant etc they aren't painful but are uncomfortable like there is a marble in my armpit. I went to the GP on Friday as they are up again, he felt the lumps and could visibly see that they were swollen lymph nodes. He referred me for an ultrasound but the referral came through and they have said their contract is ending with the NHS on 31st Oct so weren't able to book me in the dr is re sending another referral on the 23rd, so nearly a week after the first referral. I had a blood test and the white blood count was 13.3 and the neutrophil count was 9.9, they haven't given me any antibiotics, the rest of my bloods were fine. I am currently on the hot waiting list to have my gallbladder removed due to gallstones, could the raised blood counts be due to the gallstones? could raised lymph nodes in my armpits be due to the gallstones? I know I shouldn't Google but everything is pointing towards lymphoma, although I dont have night sweats or a fever, can't remember the last time I had a virus.  I am worried that the surgeons taking my gallbladder out on the 14th Nov will cancel the surgery due to elevated white blood counts. will my gp note on the next referral that I have already been waiting a week on a 2 week path way as he just seemed to want to get me off of the phone when talking through my blood tests? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about you having gallstones and these re occurring lymph nodes.

It must be an anxious time for you but until you have the ultrasound to find out more there isn't much anyone else can say.

Gallstones can cause inflammation and sometimes cause a gall bladder infection ( cholecystitis) which can both raise the white blood count. If someone has cholecystitis or the gall bladder is inflamed this can also result in nearby lymph nodes becoming inflamed and swollen.

Likewise lymph nodes are most commonly found to be swollen because of a recent or past infection that can cause reactive lymph nodes, that can be present for many months in some cases.

The ultrasound will be able determine how the lymph nodes look and if a biopsy needs to be taken to find out more.

Try and take things one step at a time for now and don't let your thoughts run away with themselves.

I hope you get a date for your ultrasound soon and that everything turns out okay for you.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
