J&J Talc - mesothelioma risks

There has been a lot in the news this week about the lawsuit against J&J and the risks of mesothelioma from asbestos in talc. As someone who has used talc all my life and used it on my children too, is it possible to provide some perspective and quantify the risk?

  • Hi WilkieMoon, and thank you for your post.

There’s been a lot in the news about a company called Johnson & Johnson being taken to court. People say their baby powder, which contained talc, might have contained a harmful substance called asbestos. Asbestos is a substance that can cause a serious illness called mesothelioma, which primarily affects the lungs.

Talc and asbestos are both found in the ground, and sometimes they can get mixed when mined. If asbestos gets into talcum powder and someone breathes it in, it could be dangerous.

But it’s important to know that this illness is very rare.

In the UK, on average, 2500 people get mesothelioma each year, and most of them from workplace exposure to asbestos in places like old buildings or factories. Using talcum powder at home is much less risky.

The UK's Ovarian Cancer Charity, Ovacome, has produced a PDF fact sheet, which states that studies have not been conclusive on the risk and that if talcum powder was contaminated with asbestos, the risk is still very small.

If you’ve used talcum powder in the past, especially on yourself or your children, try not to worry. The chance of getting sick from it is very low. But if you have any health concerns, it’s always best to speak to your doctor.
