Post operation diet.

Hi I have been home for 15 days now after my operation to remove a malignant cancer from my lower bowel.

The operation went well and I had a little difficulty going to the toilet at first but it settled down, I was having a lot of pain

around where the keyhole surgery wounds were.

In the last 5 days I have been extremely constipated (my stools were very hard) after 3 days of that I began to produce softer stools.

When I woke this morning there was a deposit of liquid in my underwear.

Can you please tell me if all of the above are normal things that happen after surgery, or should I be concerned and contact my team at my hospital?

Thank you.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

Well done on your recovery so far from your bowel surgery. It can take time for the body to fully recover and the bowel to get back to normal after an operation, but as long as there is a bowel movement of some kind, then this shows the bowel is starting to get back to its usual motion of moving waste along.

We have information on our website on 'after bowel surgery', if helpful to read.

If you feel concerned by any of the symptoms you are getting, and do not feel the slow but everyday improvement of recovery, then do speak to someone in your hospital team.

If you would like to talk to someone in our nursing team the number is 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

  • Hi sarah,

Thank  you so much for getting back to me.

You have put my mind at rest, I don’t seem to have two days the same but

as you say it is a good thing that I am still getting rid of the waste that I have to.

I’m going down a road I’ve never been down before and it’s all a bit frightening.

so once again thank you very much.

    Les.
