BCC symptoms

I recently had a biopsy which confirmed that a lesion on my scalp is cancerous, and I have been referred for surgery. I have read that waiting lists are long and that bcc is not regarded as urgent. I am quite worried though. I have had this scab for quite a long time, but it now bleeds every night, is growing and is very sore/painful. The pain seems to penetrate deep into my scalp. I know that bcc doesn’t usually metastasise but I don’t see any mention of it normally causing so much discomfort. Do these increasing symptoms mean that there is a possibility that this is actually progressing into something more worrying?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are concerned about a basal cell carcinoma ( BCC) .

The symptoms you are experiencing doesn't necessarily mean that your BCC has become something more serious, but you've noticed it getting bigger and it could possibly be affecting the deeper tissues.

Waiting lists can be long for treating BCC's, but given your symptoms, it's best to get in touch with your GP or your dermatologist to let them know about them and see what their advice is.

In the meantime, try and keep the area clean and put a dressing on as it's bleeding, and avoid knocking or scratching it, and use simple pain relief such as paracetamol if needed.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
