  • Hi Hibbsjill, and thank you for your post.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. It’s a very hard time, and it’s okay to feel scared, upset, or unsure about what’s next.

If a stent is unsuccessful or not possible, you might be able to have surgery to bypass the blockage. You would need to speak to your hospital specialist to see if you are a suitable candidate for this procedure.

Sometimes it isn't possible to have any surgery or procedures. The treatment is then more palliative, with symptom control and quality of life support as the focus rather than curative or hospital-based care. Your hospital team may have referred you to a palliative care team who are experts in patients like you, and they are community-based, so they can visit at home. This team can also provide emotional support at this very difficult time. Do speak to your specialist nurse (CNS), if you have one, to ask if this referral has happened.

If you feel unhappy with your current hospital specialist’s advice, then you can choose to seek a second opinion from another oncology team to ensure they have explored all possible options. You can ask your general practitioner or current specialist to refer you.

I hope this helps, and I hope you get the support you need.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
