Blood test question

Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me if blood tests are reliable to detect cancer in the prostate or bowel?

Thank you

  • Hi JackBeau and thank you for your post.

Blood tests are not a reliable tool in which to diagnose cancer.

This is because there are many reasons for an abnormal blood test.

But blood tests can pick up abnormalities such as anaemia, which can be caused by cancer, such as bowel cancer. Further tests are then needed, such as scans and biopsies, to confirm cancer.

At other times, elevated blood test results may occur not due to cancer but rather due to inflammation or an infection.

    I hope this explanation helps.
