My father was told he had cancer from a endoscopy yet the biopsy has come back no cancer?!

We’re feeling quite confused by the current situation and would appreciate some clarification.

My father had been experiencing ongoing fatigue, so he went for a blood test, which showed he was slightly anemic. He had no other symptoms. Following this, he underwent an upper endoscopy, during which he was informed that a cancerous polyp had been found. A biopsy was taken at that time, and we were told he would be scheduled for a CT colonoscopy and a chest scan within a week.

Today marks one week since that appointment, and he has not yet received any appointments. However, a nurse did call to inform us that the biopsy results had come back and showed no evidence of cancer. She mentioned that they plan to repeat the biopsy in case the results were inaccurate. She also noted that the CT colonoscopy would hopefully be scheduled for next week, while the repeat endoscopy may take up to two weeks as it is not currently considered urgent.

Given this conflicting information, we’re unsure how to interpret the situation. How likely is it that the biopsy result is accurate and there is, in fact, no cancer? Should we consider this a reassuring result, or is it more likely the initial sample was inconclusive or flawed?

Any guidance or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Culbul85, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your father's situation; this must not be easy for you all.

I can appreciate that there is a lot of uncertainty for your father, whether or not he has cancer. Sometimes it isn't straightforward to get a diagnosis, and repeat biopsies may be needed. This can be very frustrating.

Unfortunately, no one can give any more information until the 2nd biopsy and other tests have been done.

Waiting for tests and test results can be stressful and cause a lot of anxiety, and I hope your father can get some answers soon.

I am sorry we cannot be more helpful on this occasion. If in the meantime you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses, you can call between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, freephone 0808 800 4040.
