Awaiting potential diagnosis.

Hi, looking for some hope.
had a colonoscopy on 4th of October. Found a 2.5cm legion which doctor said was 90% certain was a polyp. 20 cm from rectum. Have a score of FIT50. Not sure what that means. Biopsy taken. Report states “possible cancer seen”.
The consultant arranged for a ct scan which happened on Friday. Awaiting an mri scan.
Not sure whether to ask for results or wait for the consultant to contact me? Scared to ask. Have two young kids who are 10 and 6. Terrified this could be terminal.
not sure what to do now. Please help. Thank you James

  • Ps not sure what FIT50 means or if it is high or not. Also is 2.5cm large for a polyp or potential tumour? Thank you

  • Hello James, and thank you for posting. I am sorry you are in this situation right now.

It is difficult to know what to do and how to wait for results, as a day can feel like a week. But, be reassured, your hospital will get in contact with you with results when they have them.

Polyps are generally benign (non-cancerous) but still need to be removed and examined under a microscope for a thorough inspection. This ensures that they can see at the cell level exactly what it is.

Positive FIT test results can range from 10 to anything in the hundreds, so there isn't a specific number that equals cancer. It's more of a trigger that something, like a polyp, a lesion or a bowel condition like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is causing bleeding.

For now, until you hear from the team, it is difficult to second-guess what might be happening for you, but try to take each day as it comes.

Take care, James, and if you want to speak to the nurses do call 0808 800 4040. Lines open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.

  • Thank you Sarah. Update today. The mri has been cancelled. Not needed. Not sure if that is good or not. The multi dis team are discussing my case Friday and an appointment will be made after that. Not sure if that rules out a benign diagnosis or not?
    thanks James

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have been having and the tests you have had carried out.

This is understandably a worrying time for you but there can be lots of reasons for blood in the stools (as picked up by a positive fit test) but it is only the colonoscopy that inspects the bowel that can tell the doctor more.

You can't read too much into the fit test result as in terms of how high or low it is, it is more of a gauge to determine who needs further tests carried out.

Polyps aren't uncommon but usually will either be removed or a biopsy sample taken to be looked at under a microscope just to be on the safe side. Larger polyps can be more suspicious but as I say only the results of the biopsy can say what this may or may not be.

Waiting for test results can be very unsettling and the mind can run away with itself at times but at times like this it is important to wait to speak with the hospital doctor once the results are in. I'm afraid no one else can tell you any more at this point in time.

I hope you know more soon and that everything turns out okay for you.

Do get back in touch if needed or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
