Waiting times

I had a CT scan on 22nd June which showed nodules in my lungs. I had Bowel cancer in 2021 which was treated with surgery and chemo.

Since June I have had a colonoscopy, a PET scan, a lung biopsy and a lung function test. I was referred by my Bowel surgeon to a Lung surgeon who has now referred me to a radiologist for RFA in the lung.

Is it normal/ reasonable that I still haven't been given a date for this treatment ? Every test or referral to a new specialist takes 3 to 4 weeks.

It is now 16 weeks since my original CT scan ?

Surely the nodules will be growing in size and may be sending out their own secondaries ?

  • Hi Carog, and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate how difficult it is waiting for things to happen. You may worry that your cancer will spread while you are waiting, but we do know that most cancers grow slowly.

It sounds as if there has been activity since the first CT scan, which the teams would have deemed necessary to establish firstly exactly what was happening with the cancer and secondly whether these nodules were cancer that needed treating.

You could ring the secretary of your lung surgeon specialist to inquire whether they have any additional information regarding your case, and to ask what might be the reason for the delay in getting your appointment with the radiologist.

If you have not yet done so, it may be helpful to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) and voice your concerns.

I hope you know more soon, but be reassured that these delays should not affect how well treatment works.

However, it can still be very frustrating.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
