Am I being paranoid? Recently diagnosed with breast cancer but have now developed a cough and chest pain. Could this be something more sinister?

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer following a biopsy 4 weeks ago. I have been told that this is early stage and they are hopeful that it can be treated with surgery and some radiotherapy.

I have over the last few days developed a cough and some chest pain which I suspect is a chest infection. Am I getting carried away thinking that this could be something more sinister? Should I be rushing to the doctor to be checked? Or should I ride this out like I would have prior to my diagnosis?

thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It's completely normal to worry about new symptoms after a cancer diagnosis. A cough and chest pain are often caused by a viral infection, irritation or even muscle strain caused from the coughing.

It's probably best to get checked out though just to be on the safe. If you have a chest infection you may need a course of antibiotics.

I hope your symptoms improve soon.  Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
