please help

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry you are worried, but we are unable to say what might happen in this situation as we are not part of your care, and it is unclear what cancer you are worried about. However, if you are talking about low-grade cell changes from a cervical screening, please do read Cancer Research UK's pages on abnormal cells and be reassured that these are very common and will be treated and should not cause you further problems.

Low-grade dyskaryosis (abnormal cells), which have become abnormal because HPV is present, will improve once the HPV leaves your system. These cells would only potentially change into a cancer cell if the HPV persisted and were allowed years to mature.

If you remain in the screening programme, keep yourself generally healthy (for your immune system) and don't smoke, then the HPV is likely to leave your system within 18months and stop causing further abnormal cells.

It can be difficult when searching online to find accurate information. Do stick to our pages, as you know, they are from the most up-to-date evidence-based research.

Take care, and hopefully you feel reassured.

    Sarah.
