Breast reconstruction two years after mastectomy - options

When I had a single mastectomy for DCIS I opted for a delayed DEIP - I wanted to stick with my own tissue but at that time wasn't able to spend the long time in recovery due to caring responsibilities. I've been on the waiting list for DEIP for well over two years and I'm now over 70. Given it's a long operation and it sounds as if recovery takes a long time, I'm starting to wonder if I should consider a silicone implant instead, particularly as it's far less time under anaesthetic. I've asked to see the surgeon again to discuss options. I'm concerned in case I have to go right back to the start of the waiting list for another 2 years and I'm not sure what to expect. Any advice or information would be most welcome.

  • Hello Jane 54 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you needed to have surgery for DCIS.

I wondered if you are still able to contact your specialist breast nurse (CNS), who knows your situation, and with whom you could discuss this.

Hopefully, deciding on a different operation will not affect where you are on the waiting list, but not being involved in your care, we cannot say for certain. It's good that you have made another appointment with the breast surgeon. They may be able to guide you more.

I am sorry we cannot be more helpful, and I hope you can get some answers soon.

    Jemma
