Persistent hpv and on and off CIN1

Hi All

New here . Bit of a backstory, I had a colposcopy done in 2021 after abnormal cells were found after having my daughter a year before. The smear i had a year later came back as HPV+ so to come back in 3 years time not 5 years. Fast forward to this September my smear has come back with repeat in 1 year and referral for a colposcopy. Over the past year or so I've had a noticeable change in my monthlys and have had back pain and leg discomfort which are unlike me

My question is can CIN1 come back and get worse over this time frame? I've been told there is a 6 week wait for my appointment at a clinic for my colposcopy.

A little anxious.

Best wishes

MJ

  • Hello, and thank you for your post.

I am sorry that you are worried about your recent smear results.

It would be unusual for abnormal cells to be causing problems related to your menstrual cycle and back pain. If you continue to have worries over your periods, do talk to your GP.

Trying to work through anxiety, whilst waiting for appointments, can be hard. Do remember that the cervical screening programme is focused on cancer prevention, so abnormal cells, which are not cancer, are removed before they can potentially mature and develop into cancer cells.

I understand that the persistent HPV is causing you concern, but once you are seen in the colposcopy clinic, they should be able to go through this more.

Take care, and hopefully you feel reassured.

    Sarah.
