Nivolumab by injection.

I will soon be receiving Nivolumab by injection rather than by infusion.  Which part of the body is injected?  How long is my appointment likely to be?  How much (mls) of the drug is injected?  Is this now the normal way of giving Nivolumab?  Sorry - lots of questions!

  • Hello Meler and thanks for your post,

Nivolumab can be given as an infusion or a subcutaneous injection which means it is injected just under the skin.

As it is a subcutaneous injection the volume will be quite small but I can't be specific on exact quantities. As you can see in the information it is usually given in the thigh or stomach over 3-5 minutes.

Over the years it has been possible to give some of the drugs subcutaneously.

I am sure they will go through and explain this when you are next seen. If you have any concerns then do discuss this with your team at the hospital.

You are very welcome to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses. The number to ring is freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
